BEST ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF A ONE-OF-A-KIND HOME

GOLD AWARD—OVER 5,000 SQ. FT.

For their property along the shores of Lake Michigan, our clients came to us
with the challenge of designing a vacation home large enough to accommodate

extended family, but with all the intimacy of a lakeside cottage. The long

driveway provides a storybook approach through native trees. The one-story

carriage-house sits out in front, allowing the massing to build up to the two-
story main house beyond. By playing with rooflines and dormers, we reduced the

scale of the house to achieve a “cottagey” feel.

Being a seasonal residence, durability of materials and energy conservation are
two key concerns. Materials such as Azek siding and high efficiency, dual-glazed

aluminum windows help keep energy consumption and maintenance down. In

addition, our clients want to incorporate green technologies such as geothermal

heating and cooling.

promotes more family gathering in the common sitting room, nestled between

two Master and three Junior Suites. On mild summer nights, the children can

enjoy “camping out” on the lakeside Sleeping Porch. The basement includes a

recreation room, bar, and gym, adding to the vacation amenities. In the rear yard,
our clients can admire spectacular lake views while lounging by the fire pit. This

remote entertaining space with stair access to the lake completes their dream

vacation home.
